Wrestling: Libertyville's Tony Carlsen
Football: Libertyville's Tony Carlsen
Tonight’s featured alumni wrestler - Tony Carlsen (Class of 1995):
Tony was a four year varsity starter, qualifying for Sectionals all three years, He took took 4th in Sectionals his So. and Jr. year one spot shy of the State Tournament. He Qualified his Sr. Year and one match shy to medal down State. He set a state tournament for the quickest technical fall at 130, in 2:10. His record will never be broken because there is no 130 pound weight class any more.
Tony was aggressive and tough, coming out right away hitting shots. He was very tough on top, lots of arm bars. On the bottom and in scrambles he was as flexible as they came, especially in his shoulders, and would not only get out of strong attacks by his opponent, he could find a way to get them on their back off of it. He was voted the team’s “Most Exciting Wrestler” his junior and senior years. and Most Valuable his Sr. year.
After LHS Tony went to the College of Lake County w a wrestling scholarship and wrestled for their team, which they no longer have. His freshman and sophomore year he qualified for the Junior College Nationals. From there he got a degree in education from Northern Illinois University and is currently teaching Physical Education at HawthornAspen School. He coaches wrestling for Hawthorn North as well as coaching freshmen and JV wrestling at Mundelein where a good number of his Hawthorn North wrestlers go.
